It’s Never Too Late To Glow Up!
“Glow up” is another one of my favorite terms these days! The basic meaning is “to go through an incredible transformation.” That could mean physically, mentally or professionally. It is used to describe someone who has “taken it to that other level.”
My main goal in my growing-older adventure is to get better with age in various areas of my life. This requires some rubbing my hands together and getting to work. I’ve been pretty good with following my beauty routines, getting some exercise and eating a little better. Now I want to take it to another level and really see what heights I can reach. Yes, y’all, I am doing a Mid-Life Mid-Year Glow Up Project!
Glowing Up Means Getting Uncomfortable!
I’m going to be honest. I’m very nervous about this. This project requires that I put myself out there in a way that I’m not used to doing. I am an introvert by nature, so this is a big step for me. Creating this blog last year was a huge step for me! It wasn’t about just “having my own blog.” I want this to be a great blog with great content. But even with my blog, I was still able to play it a bit safe. My glow up plan is changing all of that as I challenge myself personally and publicly!
All of this “taking it to the next level” means focus, discipline, accountability….and maybe a little blood, sweat and tears!
My Mid-Year, Mid-Life Glow Up Plan
Why start during the mid-year, you may be asking? My initial plan was to start at the beginning of the new year. As many of you know, I lost my dad earlier this year, so understandably this was the furthest thing on my mind.
What’s encouraging me to do a glow up project..in my earlier fifties? To this I ask – Why not do some things that will lift you up and can improve your life? The way I see it, mid-life is a great time to face fears and challenges along with analyzing what changes you want to make in your life!
My plan will begin on July 1st and end on December 31st. For these next 6 months, I will be focusing on five areas detailed below. I will be featuring blog posts that discuss in detail what I’m doing in each area and how I’m progressing. For example, one day I’ll post about weight loss, then another day about hair stuff, etc.
1. YouTube, Here I Come!
Creating video content. I love writing for my blog but creating video content is a whole other ball of wax. I am terrified about putting myself in front of a camera and posting it for the world to see! Aside from that, I have to overcome a learning curve of using my fancy camera to shoot these videos. It also means buying any necessary equipment (like lighting) to create QUALITY videos. Well, so be it! I’m going to be like Nike and just do it. Shout out to all the YouTubers out there who do this on a regular basis! You are a creative and brave bunch!
My health is okay but it could be better. Honestly, I can stand to lose a few pounds….say about twenty! Also, I tend to carry most of my weight in my upper body area. I’m what you call an “inverted triangle” shaped and want to balance this out.
- Nutrition – I tend to eat everything is moderation. However, there are times when I eat things that are not so good for me. In my humble opinion, I really need to clean up my eating. My first glow up post will cover the early stages of this.
- Fitness – I workout but I’m not consistent. I’ll be on a roll then will stop for a good month or two. Not good because I know better! When I work out on a regular basis, it makes everything in my life better! I’m more mentally sharp, my skin glows, I’m more productive and my hair grows faster! Speaking of hair…
3. Hair Growth
Going natural has done some amazing things for my hair! I have a hair care regimen that works great for my curls. I’ve had some really good growth results over the past year too. That’s a wonderful thing but what if I REALLY stepped up my regimen for maximum growth and health?
Lately, I’ve been viewing YouTube videos created by a beautiful young lady from the UK named Curly Proverbz. She already had gorgeous hair but experienced amazing growth by using Ayurveda regimens that include various oils, henna glosses, and tea rinses. It promotes strong, healthy hair which in turn promotes hair growth! I am going to try it all and see what results I get for my hair!
4. Stepping Up My Make-Up Game
I used to be a bare-minimum makeup wearer. All I cared about was a natural, polished look. I mastered the “no makeup look” years ago. Then I discovered YouTube and all of the amazing things that you can do with makeup! Menopause has already caused me to step up my game slightly just to help my makeup last for more than 20 minutes! Who knew that hot flashes can double as a makeup remover!
I’m no makeup artist but I do love makeup! I enjoy practicing different techniques, especially with eye makeup. I want to kick my skills up a notch!
5. Prettier Smile
One thing that I am not happy about is the multiple gaps and shifts in my teeth. It seems to be getting worse as I get older and needs to be addressed. I’m going to fix that by getting braces…in my 50’s! I don’t care if they’re the traditional wired kind or Invisalign. Your girl is getting them. If I require additional work (veneers or whatever) to get the smile that I want, then I will. Getting braces by the end of the year is the first step to that end result.
That pretty much sums it up for now. I’m excited and scared, but ready to do this! Stay tuned!
